Tutorial: Valentine's Day Felt Heart Garland

Parker isn't feel so well today, and quite frankly, neither am I. She was supposed to go see A Christmas Carol presented by a small community theater with her grandma, grandpa and brother today. Instead she had to stay home with me. {Bummer} So to make the day a little brighter, I gave her the choice between making a Valentines pillow case or a garland to hang up. She chose the garland, so we decided to snap some photos as we crafted and share this simple little tutorial with you!

Step 1: Gather a few pieces of your favorite colors of felt. We chose 5 different colors.
Step 2: Draft a heart template on a piece of card stock. I sketched the larger pattern first and then copied it on our printer onto another piece of card stock at 75% to get two different sizes. You could do as many different sizes or styles as you want!
Step 3: Next we cut out the templates. {Parker is such a great little helper!} Then we traced them with a disappearing ink fabric pen onto a strip of felt folded in half along the long side.  We decided to cut 1 large and 3 small hearts from each of the 5 colors of felt.

Step 4: We laid out the hearts in the pattern that we wanted to stitch them together (and we forgot to snap a photo at this point-- oops! Sorry!). Then starting from the end of the layout, I stacked them in the order that I wanted to stitch them together.

Step 5: Chain stitch (which just means stitching through the center of the hearts one at the time without a space between one heart and the next) the hearts together in one long continuous chain. This can be done by machine or by hand!

Step 6: Add a folded length of ribbon to each end of the garland if you want to tie the ends to something. (Not photographed in the finished garland photo.)
Step 7: Hang up your garland for a photo op while your puny feeling punkin poses with her finished work of heart! Easy peasy...
